Devils Claw has anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, analgesic, sedative and diuretic properties. In modern herbal medicine, it is mainly used to treat arthritis and myalgia. Many clinical studies have been done on the properties of the herb. Research conducted in Germany at the University of Jena (1958-1976) found that it has strong anti-inflammatory properties, comparable to those of cortisone and the ingredient phenylbutazine (phenylbutazone) used as an analgesic in musculoskeletal disorders, back pain and so on). The use of the herb is considered to have additional benefits in cases of indigestion and is used externally for skin diseases (poultice). It is also used in cases of arthritis, gout, muscle pain and various forms of muscle rheumatism, lower back pain and rheumatic diseases in general. The herb can relieve pain and inflammation from arthritis, as well as pain in the lower back, knees and hips. It is also used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis, etc. It has also been found to improve appetite and relieve mild stomach disorders. Its medicinal attractiveness lies in the fact that it does not contain toxic substances and has no known side effects, therefore it is suitable for general cleansing of the organs and has a good diuretic effect. Due to these properties, it acts as a preventative against possible side effects.
WARNING:
The herb promotes the secretion of acid in the stomach. This creates problems for people with peptic ulcer, gastritis or gallstones and should be avoided. It should not be consumed during pregnancy. It should not be taken by diabetics without the supervision of a specialist (the herb has hypoglycemic properties, i.e it lowers blood sugar). It is not recommended for people undergoing treatment to regulate their blood pressure (either low or high).
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
How to brew Devils Claw tea - Dried leaves of Devils Claw:
Put one teaspoonful of dried Devils Claw into a warmed teapot or small casserole. Add 250 ml (1 glass) of boiling water and boil for 10-15 minutes. Separate from the leaves and drink hot or warm. Remaining leaves could be eaten. Recommended consumption for adults: 200 ml 3 times daily (30 min before meals, for 3 weeks.)
Tip: Tea efficiency is much higher when distilled/purified water is used.
